Wetzel Estate Sustainability Mission
Wetzel Estate Winery is committed to environmental sustainability. In 2011, a 10 Kilowatt solar array was installed which generates enough power to provide 80-90% of our annual electrical usage for the winery.
In 2005, all Estate vineyards were converted to organic management. In 2011, we received certification from L.I.V.E. (Low Input Viticulture and Enology). This is one of only a few sustainable certifications for vineyards in the Pacific Northwest.
L.I.V.E. certification requires meeting stringent, environmentally-friendly management standards. For example, cover crops add natural nutrients to the soil and are used in place of conventional synthetic products. Cover crops also retain moisture which helps protect against erosion on our steep hillside slopes.
